Where we go next

How we sustain strong outcomes while preparing for the future of Weston’s schools

The most important question for any high-performing school system is not whether it is succeeding today, but how it will sustain that success over time.

Weston’s schools continue to perform at a high level because this community expects excellence. Maintaining that standard requires clear priorities, disciplined decision-making, and a continued focus on what matters most for students. As I look ahead, I’m focused on four areas that will be critical to sustaining strong outcomes: classroom excellence, supporting every student, fiscal discipline, and clear communication.

1. Strengthening excellence in the classroom

Many of our recent initiatives—such as updates to teacher evaluation systems and new curriculum investments—are now moving from planning into everyday practice. The priority going forward is to ensure these efforts are implemented consistently and continue to improve student outcomes.

  • Supporting our educators: With 93% of our staff holding advanced degrees, our greatest asset is their expertise. I’ll advocate for the continued professional training our teachers need to master the new K–5 literacy and secondary curricula, as well as our continued emphasis on data-informed instructional practices.

  • Evolving, not just maintaining: We can’t wait for results to dip before we innovate. I want to see us continue our deep-dive internal and external reviews of our academic programs. These initiatives identify our strengths, identify opportunities to enhance our efforts, and ultimately ensure all our programs prepare Weston students to be competitive in a fast-changing global economy.

2. Meeting the needs of all students

Weston’s student population is evolving. While overall performance remains strong, the complexity of student needs is increasing. This requires a thoughtful approach to how we structure support across the district.

This work is not about adding programs; it’s about ensuring that resources are aligned with student needs. That includes:

  • Ensuring social-emotional and special education supports are appropriately staffed

  • Using data to guide where support is most needed

  • Maintaining a system where every student has access to the resources required to succeed

The goal is simple: ensure that every student is supported in a way that allows them to reach their full potential.

3. Being responsible with taxpayer dollars

The annual budget is where priorities become real. Every investment reflects a set of trade-offs, and those decisions must be made carefully.

Because Weston residents invest so deeply in our schools, the School Committee has a responsibility to ensure that resources are used effectively and sustainably. That means:

  • Evaluating costs alongside student impact

  • Making disciplined decisions about new initiatives

  • Planning for both current needs and long-term obligations

The goal is to maintain high standards—small class sizes, strong programming, and high-quality facilities—while ensuring financial sustainability for the town.

4. Strengthening community and trust

Effective governance depends on public trust. That trust is built when the community understands not just what decisions are made, but why they are made.

Clear, consistent communication—explaining the data, the trade-offs, and the reasoning behind decisions—is essential. Whether the issue is a budget decision, a union negotiation, or a long-term capital project, the goal should be to make the process transparent and accessible.

Continuing to incorporate feedback from families and staff is also critical. Strong schools depend on strong partnerships between the district and the community it serves.

The bottom line: sound judgment for Weston

The School Committee’s role is not to manage day-to-day operations. It’s to apply sound judgment to complex, long-term decisions, balancing competing priorities while keeping student outcomes at the center.

Weston’s schools are one of the town’s greatest strengths. Sustaining that strength requires thoughtful planning, disciplined execution, and a clear focus on the future.

As we look ahead, I welcome your perspective. What should be our top priorities for the next phase of this work?
