I am writing this letter in support of the re-election of School Committee candidate Adam Newman. For the last year, he has led the School Committee as chair – elected by members after being on the Committee for just two years. He is chair because he has the experience and background we need on the School Committee right now.

As the (now-retired) Weston Owl, I interviewed Adam in April 2023. His answer to my question about his background was a summary of all his experience in education – he had been a teacher for four years and then worked in education strategy. The Owl also asked about his children and if they attend Weston public schools (full disclosure: Adam’s daughter had been a friend of my son in the Covid-craziness of eighth grade. As you may recall, many kids moved to private school at that time). The answer is they both attended through middle school. I didn’t ask why; that’s a private decision.

Do School Committee members without current public school students have enough skin in the game? I used to say “no, they don’t.” But now, as my kids have graduated, I feel differently. Would you say that I am not eligible to vote for Weston School Committee members because I don’t have kids in the school system? Of course not and I am voting like I have done in just about every election and Town Meeting since I moved here in 2014.

I have skin in the game and so do you, Weston – our public schools’ and town success. Adam has proven himself with a career in education and his past years of volunteer work on School Committee. We are fortunate as a town that he is willing to again volunteer his time for Weston Public Schools. Go ‘cats!

Adam Newman has already demonstrated the kind of judgment and steadiness the School Committee needs right now. As Chair, he has helped guide the district through complex decisions while keeping the focus where it belongs—on students and on measurable outcomes that reflect their experience.

The work ahead will involve issues such as AI and other technologies, our secondary campus, leadership transitions, and how the district prepares students for what lies beyond Weston. These are ongoing decisions that require consistency, perspective, and a willingness to ask hard questions over time.

I’ve known Adam for over 20 years and had the opportunity to serve alongside him on the School Committee. Earlier in my career, when my company engaged his firm, his strategic thinking—and the questions he asked—led us to change direction in a way that made a meaningful difference. On the Committee, he brings that same perspective, consistently keeping the focus on students and on measurable outcomes.

As current Chair, Adam provides important continuity as the district navigates complex, multi-year initiatives, including strategic planning, leadership transitions, and the negotiation of a new contract with Weston’s educators. His professional work advising organizations on complex decisions, including educational technology and AI, brings valuable real-world insight to Weston at a time when those issues are increasingly central to education.

While Adam no longer has children in the district, School Committee members have served effectively over the years without children in Weston Public Schools. The Committee also includes strong parent representation. Adam complements those perspectives with broad experience, institutional knowledge, and a clear, district-wide focus.

During Adam's tenure on the committee, Weston’s schools have remained among the strongest in the state. Sustaining that performance depends on continued, well-informed leadership. I hope you’ll support Adam Newman for re-election.

The best investment that we can make in the Weston Public Schools is to re-elect School Committee Chair Adam Newman. As a former School Committee member, I am keenly familiar with the demands of the work, the steep learning curve, and the breadth of skills required to make effective decisions—all while centering the needs of students and families. This position requires a deep dive into educational policy and practice, knowledge of state and nationwide trends, and measuring school performance as evidenced by data, testing, and case studies. This role is best served by those who work for the greater good and through strong, patient and respectful relationships.

None of this is new to Adam, who has proven to be a committed leader, listener, and learner in his first term. His 30+ year professional career exemplifies a strong commitment to improving education for all children; this requires understanding the unique needs of students of various learning profiles, and the needs of teachers and families to optimize learning. As a former teacher and coach, Adam knows first-hand how to help students succeed and grow, and has demonstrated how to communicate with integrity and respect. As an advisor and business leader, Adam has the knowledge and vision to keep a high performing district such as Weston striving for continual improvement, while staying aware of industry trends.

The next few years will bring many decisions before our entire community. To me, what’s more important than whether or not we have kids in the district, are new parents or retired, or are transplants or natives—is that it’s imperative that we see the Weston forest for the trees. It is our collective responsibility to invest in the educational futures of our town’s children.

Vote for Adam Newman on May 2nd. Vote for Weston’s future.

Letter to the Editor: Newman Brings Rare Expertise

The recent letters supporting Steve Dietz emphasize his “skin in the game” as a parent with children in the Weston Public Schools. That perspective is important—and it is already well represented. Every other member of the School Committee has children in the system and brings that lived experience to the role. The question for voters, then, is what additional expertise strengthens the Committee’s ability to govern a system that represents roughly half of Weston’s annual budget.

Adam Newman brings a form of expertise that is both rare and directly relevant. He is a co-founder of Tyton Partners, a strategy consulting firm focused exclusively on the education sector. The firm has grown to include more than 80 professionals advising school systems, universities, nonprofits, and education-focused organizations on complex challenges such as resource allocation, academic strategy, and long-term planning. This is precisely the kind of work that mirrors the responsibilities of a School Committee—making difficult, informed decisions that balance competing priorities while sustaining high performance.

World-class expertise of this kind is not theoretical—it is highly valued, and organizations routinely pay significant sums to access it. I know this firsthand as a client of Tyton Partners, where their reputation is built on rigorous, non-political, and non-ideological analysis in service of better outcomes in education. In my role on the Finance Committee, I have also worked directly with Adam in his capacity on the School Committee and have found the depth of his expertise to be both impressive and vital. Our town is fortunate to have many volunteers who care deeply about the work — when those volunteers also bring substantial expertise it is a rare combination that we, as a community, should appreciate and embrace.  As a parent of two children in the Weston Public Schools, I find it incredibly reassuring that someone with that level of experience and judgment is willing to devote his time and energy to help guide our district. I plan to vote for Adam in the upcoming election.

I’m supporting Adam Newman, the School Committee’s current chair, for re-election. He has spent 30+ years in education. Starting in the classrooms as a teacher, he now runs one of the country’s premier educational consulting companies. Adam is at the forefront of new technologies, methods and organizational models that yield the best results and find efficiencies in our schools. We get his wealth of knowledge and expertise for free.

The School Committee is currently negotiating with three unions, including teachers.  With multiple union contracts under negotiation, Adam’s steady, constructive approach matters. Good relationships mean productive classrooms. Let’s help Adam keep that going.

Adam has also been part of guiding a budget that balances maintaining a high-quality education with being thoughtful about taxpayer dollars. Under Adam’s leadership, the School Committee’s budget is endorsed by the Finance Committee for passage at Town Meeting. Neighboring towns are facing teacher layoffs and budget cuts. Careful stewardship of our tax dollars and ensuring a top-quality education for our children are main priorities for Adam.

We’re fortunate to have someone with Adam’s experience and commitment willing to serve. I hope you’ll help re-elect him and please get out and vote.
